BIA readies report on Oneida Nation land-into-trust
Friday, September 29, 2006

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is preparing a report on the Oneida Nation's land-into-trust application.

The BIA circulated a 1,000-page "pre-draft" environmental report to officials in upstate New York. The state and local governments have until today to submit their response.

The Oneida Nation also has the chance to submit comments. A tribal spokesperson said a response will be sent to the BIA today.

The tribe has purchased more than 17,000 acres of its original 250,000-acre reservation. The land was treated as Indian Country until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the tribe must go through the land-into-trust process.
