Oneida Nation, NCAI host Native vote rally
Tuesday, October 24, 2006

More than 600 people attended a Native vote rally hosted by the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the National Congress of American Indians.
Oneida Chairman Gerald Danforth, NCAI President Joe Garcia and National Indian Gaming Association Chairman Ernie Stevens Jr., who is Oneida, spoke to the crowd. The rally was held at the hotel owned by the Oneidas.
"Our tribe is a small tribe, and we need to make our voices heard," Vaughn LaVelle, a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans who attended the rally, told The Green Bay-Press Gazette. "I want people like my granddaughter to understand that every vote counts."
The event was followed by a debate between the candidates for the 8th U.S. Congressional seat.
Democrat Steve Kagen is running against Republican John Gard being vacated by Rep. Mark Green (R), who is running for governor against Democratic incumbent Jim Doyle.
