Farmington combats image as racist border town

Officials in Farmington, New Mexico, are working to change the city's image as just another racist border town.

Farmington was the site of two recent race-related incidents. A Navajo man was fatally shot by a police officer and three young white males beat up a Navajo man.

The incidents helped fuel a Navajo Nation Council report that said Navajos felt powerless to confront discrimination in Farmington. But city officials say they are working with the tribe to ensure that Navajos have a voice.

The city is proposing to create a Community Relations Committee to hear complaints. The police department wants to improve its dormant Citizen Police Advisory Committee.
