Oneida Nation foreclosure case headed to 2nd Circuit
Wednesday, November 15, 2006

The Oneida Nation's foreclosure case is headed to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.

A federal judge has ruled that two counties cannot foreclose on land owned by the tribe. The final ruling was made this month, clearing the way for the appeal.

The tribe owns more than 17,000 acres in Oneida and Madison counties. The land is held in fee and the tribe wants the land placed into trust.

The U.S. Supreme Court said the tribe has to go through the land-into-trust process before claiming sovereignty on its properties.
