Delay in residential school abuse settlement

Appeals and cross-appeals have delayed resolution of the $1.9 billion residential school abuse settlement in Canada.

Several judges have approved the deal to provide payments to all former residential school students. Elderly Natives have already received $74.8 million, the Assembly of First Nations said.

But the remainder of the payments is held up in a dispute over attorney's fees. The Canadian government and a law firm have filed appeals over $15 million to $40 million in fees to be awarded to one particular firm.
