Former BIA officials start new Washington law firm

Two former Bureau of Indian Affairs officials who served during the Clinton administration announced the formation of a new law firm in Washington, D.C.

Michael J. Anderson, a member of the Muscogee Nation of Oklahoma, and Loretta A. Tuell, a member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho, said their firm, AndersonTuell, will specialize in Indian law. They will represent tribes before Congress, the federal agencies and the courts.

"Since we began working together over a decade ago, Loretta and I both had a goal of creating a highly specialized law practice that would work hand-in-hand with in-house tribal counsel to advance the ability of tribal governments to operate effectively, efficiently, and independently," said Anderson.

Anderson and Tuell served under former BIA head Kevin Gover. Anderson was the deputy assistant secretary and Tuell was a counselor to the assistant secretary. After the end of the Clinton administration in 2000, both went to work for Monteau & Peebles, another Indian law firm.

Derril B. Jordan, a member of the Mattaponi Tribe of Virginia, joins AndersonTuell as a partner. He also worked at the Interior Department during the Clinton administration.
