Apology resolution introduced again in Congress
Tuesday, February 13, 2007

Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Virginia) has re-introduced H.J.Res.3, a bill to apologize to Native peoples for their treatment by the United States.

The bill cites a long list of policies and actions that were aimed at eliminating Native people and tribes. It urges the president to "acknowledge the offenses of the United States against Indian tribes in the history of the United States in order to bring healing to this land by providing a proper foundation for reconciliation between the United States and Indian tribes."

The bill was referred to the House Resources Committee. Davis said she will ask Rep. Nick Rahall (D-West Virginia), the committee's chairman, for his support.
