Kempthorne meets with tribes to discuss meth

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne met with tribal leaders in Arizona on Thursday to discuss the methamphetamine crisis in Indian Country.

Representatives of 13 Arizona tribes said meth is a problem on their reservations. The Navajo Nation has linked meth to the doubling of homicides, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community helped break up a major meth ring, the Tohono O'odham Nation routinely seizes drugs smuggled through the U.S. border and the Hualapai Tribe said meth has led to an increase in violent crime.

Interior's proposed 2008 budget contains $16 million to attack meth and beef up law enforcement in Indian Country. Hualapai Chairman Charles Vaughn said the money was "inadequate" but called it a start, The Arizona Republic reported.
