Houston official: Stop apologizing to Indians
Wednesday, March 28, 2007

The United States needs to stop apologizing to American Indians and stop giving them money, a city council member in Houston, Texas, said on Tuesday.

Michael Berry, who serves as mayor pro tem, said the federal government spends too much money on Indian Country. "Our entire Department of the Interior, practically, is the Department of Indian Affairs," he said on his KPRC-AM radio show.

"Why are we still giving Indians exclusive rights to gamble, exclusive rights to print money, which is also known as a casino," he added.

Berry said he has "enough American Indian in me, that I qualify for enough things" to make his comments, which were raised in response to a bill that would apologize to African-Americans for slavery. A short clip can be found here.
