Red Lake Nation receives $1M Shakopee grant

The Red Lake Nation has received a $1 million grant from a fellow tribe in Minnesota.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Dakota Community awarded the grant so the Red Lake Nation can reopen a commercial walleye fishery. " It is very important to us to help other Indian people help themselves," Shakopee Chairman Stanley R. Crooks said.

The Red Lake Nation has operated the only commercial walleye fishery in the U.S. Dwindling numbers forced its closure in the mid-1990s but the tribe has been working to restore the fish.
