BIA office in Palm Springs under investigation
Tuesday, April 10, 2007

The Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Palm Springs, California, is under investigation for failing to implement key trust reforms, Gannett News Service reports.

The office manages prime real estate for members of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. But the land is losing a "substantial amount of trust income" due to the BIA's failures, an Interior Department solicitor said.

The problems include delays on lease agreements, overdue payments and the failure to assess proper annual rent increases, Gannett reports.

Inspector General Earl E. Devaney confirmed that the office has not implemented the recommendations of a 1992 audit report. Devaney is conducting an investigation, which includes claims that a BIA official and two staff members received gifts from someone who leases trust land.

Land in the Palm Springs area accounts for about a fifth of trust income nationwide, according to an Office of Special Trustee official.
