Eastern Shawnee Tribe claims victory in Ohio
Tuesday, April 17, 2007

The Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma is claiming victory on its land claim in Ohio.

The tribe agreed to a proposed order to dismiss its claim to 146 square miles of ancestral territory. Chief Glenna Wallace said the decision means the tribe can return to Ohio and seek to have land placed in trust.

As part of the lawsuit, the tribe reached agreements with some communities. But the federal judge handling the case refused to accept them as land claim settlements, saying they could be misconstrued under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

A tribal attorney said the judge's apprehension won't affect the tribe's land-into-trust efforts.
