Lumbee Tribe accused of stealing heritage
Tuesday, May 1, 2007

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is being accused of stealing the heritage of the historic Tuscarora Nation.

The Tuscarora Nation of Indians of the Carolinas claims to be the original inhabitants of the state. The tribe says the Lumbees are claiming Tuscarora ancestry in order to gain federal recognition.

The historic Tuscarora Nation was based in North Carolina. The tribe was forced to move to New York following battles with non-Indians.

The Tuscarora Nation in New York is federally recognized but the Tuscarora group in North Carolina is not.
