EPA plans to clean up uranium sites on Navajo Nation

The Environmental Protection Agency says it will clean up five uranium sites on the Navajo Nation.

The five residential sites are located near Gallup, New Mexico. They have been contaminated by runoff from the abandoned Northeast Church Rock Mine.

Tests by the EPA and the tribe showed elevated levels of uranium in the soil. The contamination could cause serious health problems, including cancer.

The Navajo Nation says over 1,300 uranium sites need cleaning.
