BIA approves land-into-trust for Shakopee Tribe
Thursday, June 14, 2007

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has approved a land-into-trust application for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Minnesota.

The tribe asked for the land over a decade ago. The BIA rejected the request, saying the tribe was too financially successful.

A second attempt proved more successful. But after a favorable decision from the regional office, the central office in Washington, D.C., withdrew its support.

Finally, assistant secretary Carl Artman gave the go-ahead for the 752-acre site. He said a tribe's financial status has no bearing on the need for the land acquisition.
