Rep. Watson to introduce Cherokee Freedmen bill

Rep. Diane Watson (D-California) plans to introduce a bill today to cut federal funding for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma until the tribe restores citizenship to the Freedmen.
The bill affects funding from all federal agencies and withdraws federal approval of the tribe's
gaming operations. Funding and gaming will be restored only when the tribe certifies to Congress that is is complying with an 1866 treaty that included the Freedmen [

As plans for the bill moved forward, Cherokee Chief Chad Smith sought to negotiate an agreement with the Freedmen. He denied suggestions that the Freedmen would gain their own land base, gaming operation and share of the Arkansas River settlement.
