Letters urge judge against leniency for Griles
Friday, June 22, 2007

At least three letters to the judge who will sentence J. Steven Griles are urging against leniency for the former Interior Department official.

Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in the Indian trust fund case; Friends of the Earth, an environmental group; and an anonymous "citizen" asked Judge Ellen Huvelle not to treat Griles lightly. She is due to sentence him for lying to the Senate Indian Affairs Committee about his relationship with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

"Hopefully, your actions and words will now send a message that he will not forget. It is time for government officials to be held accountable," Cobell said in her letter.

Griles is trying to avoid prison time for his crime by doing community service.
