Domestic violence linked to suicides at Rosebud

A rise in suicides and attempted suicides on the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota is linked to domestic violence, the Associated Press reports.

Two victims say they tried to commit suicide after being physically and verbally assaulted. Both sought help at the White Buffalo Calf Shelter, whose director said domestic violence has caused women to turn to substance abuse and suicide.

In the past two years, at least six young people on the reservation have taken their lives. Tribal law enforcement have responded to more than 200 suicide attempts.
