Charles Grim withdraws nomination for IHS

Dr. Charles Grim, a member of the Cherokee Nation, has withdrawn his nomination to be director of the Indian Health Service.
Grim went before the Senate Indian Affairs Committee for his confirmation hearing in July. He acknowledged that the White House forced him to change his testimony to eliminate references to the trust responsibility.
Grim began serving as director in July 2003. No reason has been given for the withdrawal. An acting director has not been announced.
"Throughout his tenure, Charles has demonstrated his compassion and strong leadership on behalf of the 1.9 million people who receive health care services through the IHS. He strengthened the focus on preventative health care within IHS, directing resources to initiatives in behavioral health, health promotion/disease prevention, and chronic care management," Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said in a statement.
