Shakopee Tribe crosses $100M mark in donations
Wednesday, October 3, 2007

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota marks a major milestone next month when it crosses the $100 million mark in charitable donations.

The small tribe is possibly the generous in Indian Country. "The other tribes do what they can, but Shakopee is by far out in front," John McCarthy, the executive director of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association, told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.

No project is too big or small for a donation. From $1,000 for a local police department to $21 million for the Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, the Shakopees are generous with their wealth.

"We're just happy to be able to help when we can," Glynn A. Crooks, the tribe's vice chairman, told the paper. "We can't do everything, but we do help."

The Minnesota Council on Foundations has placed the tribe on its top 25 grantmakers in the state. "They have a long cultural history of giving." the council's executive director said.
