Shakopee Tribe donates $12.5M to university

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is donating $12.5 million to the University of Minnesota.

The school will use $10 million towards a new $288 million football stadium. The donation is the single largest gift ever made to the athletics program.

Another $2.5 million will be used to develop a scholarship fund for Indian students. The university will match the $2.5 million.

In exchange, the tribe will get naming and landscaping rights at the new stadium. "This is an historic place for us. This was an opportunity to make a significant impact on something that will be around for a long time," Chairman Stanley Crooks told The Minneapolis Star Tribune.
