Winnebago veteran's funeral botched due to race
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

It took the intervention of President Harry S. Truman to ensure a Winnebago veteran received a proper burial.

John Rice died in 1950 during the Korean War. His wife wanted to bury him in Sioux City, Iowa, near the reservation.

But the cemetery halted the funeral after finding out that Rice was Native. His family was forced to take his body back to the reservation until Truman intervened and ensured burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Rice's story was told by his grandson and his daughter at Morningside College in Sioux City.
