Standing Rock group discusses 'Fighting Sioux'
Tuesday, November 6, 2007

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe met with students, alumni and faculty to discuss the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The group of about 15 -- mostly veterans -- was brought to the campus by Sam Dupris, who has been working on behalf of the Ralph Engelstad Arena to promote the "Sioux" name. Dupris is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

The meeting was closed to the media. One attendee told The Grand Forks Herald that most of the people expressed opposition to the nickname and logo.

UND has agreed to get rid of "Fighting Sioux" within three years unless it can get the support of Sioux tribes. The Standing Rock veterans had passed a resolution in August in support of the name but it was rescinded after other tribal members protested.
