Utah seeks to pull out of Navajo trust fund
Wednesday, November 14, 2007

The state of Utah is seeking to eliminate its role as trustee for Navajo oil and gas royalties.

In 1933, Congress gave the state the duty to manage Navajo trust assets in San Juan County. But the state plans to let its role expire next summer.

Navajo leaders said the move was historic. They want to be able to manage their own funds.

Meanwhile, the state still faces a lawsuit to account for $62 million in Navajo trust funds from 1955 to 1991.
