NCAA issues statement on 'Sioux' settlement

The NCAA on Monday issued a statement as part of its settlement with the University of North Dakota over the use of the school's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

The statement acknowledges UND's "many programs and outreach services to the Native American community and surrounding areas." The NCAA says UND intends to use the "Sioux" nickname and logo with "utmost respect and dignity" to Sioux tribes [Link].

The settlement requires UND to eliminate the "Fighting Sioux" within three years unless it can obtain approval from Sioux tribes in the state.
