Navajo Head Start spent $35K on NIEA trip to Hawaii
Friday, November 23, 2007

The Navajo Nation's Head Start program spent $35,000 to send 15 people to the National Indian Education Association conference in Hawaii, the Associated Press reports.

The director of the program said the tribe received approval from the federal Administration for Children and Families to use Head Start funds for the trip. Just last year, the ACT suspended all funding to the tribe after a review found a number of employees with criminal backgrounds.

Over 350 Navajos attended the conference, but not all were necessarily working for the tribe. Tribal officials said they sent 50 employees, including the Head Start ones, to Hawaii for more than $110,000.
