'Fighting Sioux' lawsuit cost more than $5M

The lawsuit over the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo cost more than $5 million, the judge handling the case said.

UND sued NCAA in June 2006. In less than 18 months, the school ran up a bill of about $900,000 while the NCAA ran up four to five times that amount.

The two sides finally reached a settlement last month. It requires UND to get rid of the "Sioux" name and logo within three years unless it can get approval of Sioux tribes in the state.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has reaffirmed its opposition, leading some to question whether the school should wait three years. The North Dakota Board of Higher Education will be discussing early retirement of the controversial nick and logo.
