Meeting planned with tribes over 'Fighting Sioux'
Tuesday, December 4, 2007

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education plans to meet with Sioux tribal leaders to discuss the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

Chancellor William Goetz and board President John Paulsen want a preliminary meeting before engaging in a formal effort with the tribes to secure approval for the nickname and logo. A settlement requires UND to give up the "Sioux" in three years unless tribes support it.

But the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has already reaffirmed its opposition to the name and logo. Some have questioned the need for formal talks given the tribe's strong stance and have said the state board could retire the "Sioux" before the three-year period is up

Paulsen said he and Goetz want to meet with tribes before bringing up that possibility with the board. A date for the meeting has not been set.
