Hopi woman confirmed as U.S. Attorney for Arizona

Diane Humetewa, a member of the Hopi Tribe of Arizona, has been confirmed as the U.S. Attorney for Arizona.

Humetewa is the first Native American and first Native woman to hold the post. She came highly recommended from Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) and Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Arizona)

Humetewa has worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona on tribal issues. She also worked for the Office of Tribal Justice at the Department of Justice and for the Senate Indian Affairs Committee twice, both times when McCain served as chairman.

"Her background as a prosecutor, crime-victims advocate, and years of public service made her an outstanding nominee and will serve her well in this important position," said Kyl.

Humetewa permanently replaces Paul Charlton, one of several U.S. Attorneys who were fired by the Bush administration last December. Both Humetewa and Charlton are well-respected among tribes in Arizona.
