'Fighting Sioux' not going away any time soon
Friday, December 21, 2007

It's beginning to look like the North Dakota Board of Higher Education will hold onto the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo as long as possible.

A settlement gives the University of North Dakota three years to gain the support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Nation. If the tribes don't back the nickname and logo, UND must eliminate them.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has already reaffirmed its opposition to the name. Despite the stance, the higher education board on Thursday approved a plan for North Dakota University System Chancellor Bill Goetz to meet with both tribes to talk about the nickname and logo.

The board also envisions even more meetings that involve the state attorney general and the state's Congressional delegation. Board members said there was no need to rush the process, indicating "Fighting Sioux" will probably die slow and painfully.
