North Dakota official to meet with tribes over 'Sioux'

North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz plans to meet with leaders of two Sioux tribes in the state to discuss the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

UND settled a lawsuit last year over the use of the controversial symbols. The school has to eliminate "Sioux" in three years unless it can get support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Nation.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe quickly passed a resolution against the name. The Spirit Lake Nation has a standing resolution that neither supports nor opposes the name, chairwoman Myra Pearson said.

Goetz plans to meet with tribal leaders before a February 21 meeting with the North Dakota Board of Higher Education.
