Pueblo Congressional candidate backs Obama

Benny Shendo Jr., the former Indian Affairs Secretary for the state of New Mexico, is endorsing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) for president.

Shendo, who is from Jemez Pueblo, recently stepped down from his state position to run for Congress. He is seeking the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Congressional district.

Obama is scheduled to visit New Mexico on Friday in advance of the state's primary on February 5. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) is sending former President Bill Clinton to the state on Thursday

After Alaska, New Mexico has the highest percentage of American Indians and Alaska Natives, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
