Native leader faces second hate crimes trial

David Ahenakew, a former chief of the Assembly of First Nations, will be tried a second time for allegedly violating Saskatchewan's hate crimes law.

Ahenakew, 74, is accused of promoting hatred against Jewish people. He defended the Holocaust and praised Adolf Hitler in remarks that were published in a newspaper.

Ahenakew was found guilty but won the right to a new trial on appeal. Saskatchewan should take the case to the Supreme Court Of Canada, the Canadian Jewish Congress said.
