McCain seals GOP nomination after Romney exit
Friday, February 8, 2008

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the former chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, all but secured the Republican nomination for president after former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney dropped out on Thursday.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) remain in the race. But McCain secured big victories on Super Tuesday, essentially making him the front-runner.

Of McCain and Democratic rivals Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama, McCain has the most extensive and lengthy experience with Indian issues. Of all three, Obama has made the most concerted effort to reach out to Indian Country though Clinton has secured more endorsements from prominent tribal leaders.
