North Dakota board to hear about 'Sioux' talks
Wednesday, February 20, 2008

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education meets on Thursday to hear about efforts to keep the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo alive.

The board authorized North Dakota University System Chancellor Bill Goetz to meet with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Nation to discuss the future of the controversial nickname. UND can keep using the "Sioux" name and logo if the tribes support it.

Goetz met with Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Ron His Horse Is Thunder last Friday but details aren't being disclosed. The tribe has passed two resolutions against the use of the "Sioux" name and logo.

The Grand Forks Herald said it wasn't clear if Goetz has met with Spirit Lake leaders. The tribe has a resolution that neither supports nor opposes the name and logo.
