Karuk Tribe sues over rejected salmon advertisement
Thursday, February 21, 2008

The Karuk Tribe of northern California filed a lawsuit on Wednesday after an advertisement promoting salmon in the Klamath River Basin was rejected by a public transit agency in Oregon.

The tribe and environmental group called Friends of the River sought to place the ad on Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) buses. But it was rejected because it did not advertise goods or services.

In a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Karuk Tribe and Friends of the River say their First Amendment rights are being violated. "Refusing to run this ad is discriminatory and illegal," vice chairman Leaf Hillman said.

The tribe supports the removal of dams from the Klamath basin to restore salmon runs.
