Committee to examine 'Fighting Sioux' name

The North Dakota University System is creating a committee to examine the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.
The committee will determine the future of the controversial symbol. Chancellor Bill Goetz has all but indicated the name and logo are headed for retirement.
UND agreed to stop using "Fighting Sioux" in three years unless it can get approval from Sioux tribes in the state. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has already said no while the Spirit Lake Nation neither supports nor opposes the name and logo.
The majority of Indian students and alumni at UND oppose the name.
