Hundreds of tribal leaders are in Washington, D.C., this week for the annual winter session of the National Congress of American Indians.

The meeting kicks off today and runs through Wednesday. Tribal leaders will hear from Bush administration officials and members of Congress about a wide range of issues, from health care to appropriations.

Confirmed speakers include: assistant secretary Carl Artman, Howard Dean of the Democratic National Committee, John Echohawk of the Native American Rights Fund, Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), Sen. John Thune (R-South Dakota), Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Michigan) and Rep. Dan Boren (D-Oklahoma).

The leadership banquet takes place tonight. The family of the late Woodrow Wilson Keeble, a Dakota veteran who is receiving the Medal of Honor at the White House today, will be recognized.

On Tuesday night, NCAI will host a Capitol Hill reception at the National Museum of the American Indian. For more information, visit http://www.ncai.org/Home.327.0.html.
