Committee on 'Fighting Sioux' being formed
Tuesday, March 4, 2008

North Dakota University System Chancellor William Goetz is forming a committee to examine the future of the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo.

Goetz isn't saying who will be on the committee. Members won't be named until the North Dakota Board of Higher Education meets on April 3.

Under a settlement with the NCAA, UND must have the support of Sioux tribes in the state to keep using the "Sioux" name and logo. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has re-affirmed its opposition and Goetz has said there is essentially no way to gain tribal support.
