Sen. McCain secures GOP nomination for president
Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the former chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, secured the Republican Party's nomination for president on Tuesday.

McCain was already headed towards victory when he won four more primaries yesterday. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) conceded after the votes came in.

McCain's campaign has put together an Indian committee to target the Native vote. The co-chairs are John Tahsuda, a member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, and Jana McKeag, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, are the co-chairs.

Tahsuda, a former aide to McCain who now works as a lobbyist, said people can contact him if they are interested in joining the effort. Ron Allen, the chairman of the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe of Washington and the secretary of the National Congress of American Indians, is backing McCain.

The GOP convention takes place September 1-4 in the Twin Cities, Minnesota.
