Canada pays out $1.3B in residential school case
Thursday, April 17, 2008

The Canadian government says it has paid out $1.3 billion to former students of Native residential schools.

The payments went to about 75,000 former students. That accounts for more than 90 percent of claims, according to the government.

Some Native leaders and former students have accused the government of moving too slow. Another $600 million needs to be distributed.

The next step in the $1.9 billion settlement is to appoint a national truth and reconciliation commission. The Canadian government also has to formally apologize for its role in the residential schools.
