TheSenate Indian Affairs Committeeon Thursday approved H.R. 65, the Lumbee Recognition Act.

The bill extends federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The tribe is currently barred from going through the Bureau of Indian Affairs process.

The House passed the bill last June. It's not clear when it might come up for a final vote in the Senate.

Congress hasn't approved a stand-alone recognition bill since the 1990s.
