House hearing on Missouri River compensation
Monday, May 5, 2008

The House Natural Resources Committee is holding a hearing this Thursday on H.R.155, the Lower Brule and Crow Creek Tribal Compensation Act.

The bill compensates the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe for damages caused by water projects along the Missouri River. The tribes lost valuable land, sacred sites and other property to dams created by the federal government.

Congress previously compensated the tribes but they are asking for more money. The Government Accountability Office said the Lower Brule and Crow Creek settlements weren't in line with other Missouri River settlements.

The hearing will be held by the Subcommittee on Water and Power.
