Hog farm operator challenges tribal jurisdiction
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

The operators of a proposed hog farm in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, are headed to federal court to challenge the jurisdiction of the Yankton Sioux Tribe.

Long View Farm of Iowa says the tribe lacks authority over the operation. But tribal members say the farm site is within the original boundaries of the reservation.

Tribal members have been protesting at the site of the farm in hopes of stopping construction. A lawsuit in federal court accuses Long View of failing to follow federal environmental and historic preservation laws.
