Clinton and Obama eye Indian vote in South Dakota
Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) are taking their presidential campaigns to South Dakota this week.

In advance of the state's June 3 primary, Clinton and Obama will make appearances in the state. Clinton is visiting Aberdeen on Thursday and Obama is headed to Watertown, Sioux Falls and possibly Aberdeen on Friday.

Former president Bill Clinton is visiting the Pine Ridge Reservation on Wednesday. He last went to the reservation in 1999 to talk about economic development.

Obama is sending Ethel Kennedy, the wife of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and their son, Max Kennedy, to Pine Ridge on Friday. Sen. Kennedy had campaigned for the presidency on the reservation before he was assassinated in 1968.

The reservation, home to the Oglala Sioux Tribe, is the largest in the state. John Yellowbird Steele, the president of the tribe, has endorsed Obama.
