Yakama Nation targets high rate of diabetes

More than 1,000 people on the Yakama Nation in Washington suffer from diabetes, The Yakima Herald-Republic reports.
One in five tribal members over the age of 50 is affected by the disease. Nationally, Native Americans are nearly three times more likely to be diagnoses with diabetes.
With the help of a five-year, $400,000 grant, the tribe has started a Healthy Heart program. Administered by the
Indian Health Service, the program treats about 270 tribal members with diabetes.
Dr. Rex Quaempts, a tribal member, said the program has been successful. He cited a 30 to 50 percent overall improvement in blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, all of which are linked to diabetes.
Another tribal program educates sufferers about preventive measures.
