Sen. Obama started Indian outreach early
Thursday, May 29, 2008

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Illinois) started his outreach to Indian Country early in his campaign, The Politico reports.

Obama met with representatives of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians last June. Since then, he's met privately and publicly with tribal leaders in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Montana and South Dakota, his campaign said.

Obama also campaigned on the Crow Reservation in Montana, the first presidential candidate to go to Indian Country during this campaign. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York) followed suit with a visit to the Flathead Reservation in Montana and the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) hasn't been to a reservation yet but he met with tribal leaders in New Mexico earlier this week.
