Golfer Notah Begay still on the road to a comeback
Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Eight years after his last victory on the PGA Tour, Navajo/Pueblo golfer Notah Begay III is slowly making his comeback.

Begay won the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2000. He was considered a rising star but was sidelined by a back injury that kept him off the greens.

"I remember being 20th on the money list, and I couldn't go to the British Open in 2001 because my back couldn't handle the flight," Begay told The Memphis Commercial Appeal. "As a kid, you grow up dreaming of being exempt from the majors. And here I was, a 27-year-old kid, exempt from the majors, and I couldn't go. It was crushing."

This week, Begay is back in Memphis to compete in the Stanford St. Jude Championship. At age 35, he says he feels as healthy as ever.
