BIA students compete in national poetry contest

A group of students from the
Santa Fe Indian School in New Mexico will compete in the
Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Washington, D.C., next month.
Nolan Eskeets (Navajo), April Chavez (Pueblo/Navajo) and Santana Shorty (Navajo) are among those headed to the competition. They are are part of a growing number of young poets from SFIS, which sent a student to the national
Poetry Out Loud last year.
The students are the only all-Indian team in the poetry slam. An HBO film crew has been following them around as part of a documentary.
The competition takes place July 14-19 at the
Lincoln Theatre.
