First lawsuits filed over Oneida land-into-trust

The first two lawsuits were filed against the Interior Department to challenge the acquisition of 13,000 acres in trust for the Oneida Nation of New York.

Upstate Citizens for Equality filed suit in federal court in New York. The group claims the land-into-trust provisions of the Indian Reorganization Act are unconstitutional.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians of Wisconsin filed suit in federal court in Washington, D.C. The tribe, which claims land that is owned by the Oneida Nation, challenges the merits of Interior's decision.

Three more lawsuits are expected to filed by Thursday, the deadline to challenge the government's decision.
